Whittier is a beautiful city that resides in Southern California in the Los Angeles County. The city constitutes part of the Gateway Cities, much like the nearby Montebello. Whittier was incorporated in February 1989 and officially became a charter city in 1955. The name gets its name from poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Far before it became the Whittier of today, the roots of Whittier trace all the way back to 1784 and a Spanish soldier named Manuel Nieto. Nieto received a Spanish land grant of three-hundred thousand acres that would become Rancho Los Nietos as a reward for his services, though the land claim was slightly diminished due to a dispute with Mission San Gabriel. Nieto built a ranch for his family in the land that would become Whittier, which stretched across the hills north of Whittier, Fullerton and Brea and south to the Pacific Ocean. Over numerous decades, Whittier would grow from a one horse settlement into a sprawling and thriving city that housed the aforementioned John Greenleaf Whittier, and contains plenty to love for both residents and visitors alike.
Whittier experiences the typical Californian weather, as well as the swells, heat and light breezes off of the Pacific coast, with higher heats in the rocky hill areas. Temperatures stay fairly consist throughout the year with higher heats, precipitation and humidity involved, especially in the summer months. Residents and visitors alike can expect occasional rainstorms, thunderstorms and high wind velocities associated with storms off the Pacific coast, especially during hurricane season.
Whittier is in just the right location to get out and experience all the natural beauty and wonders of California. With beaches aplenty, lots of local recreational spots, wildlife and other attractions, it is easy to get yourself and the rest of the family out for a day of fun. You can’t go wrong with all of the hiking and exploration opportunities in Whittier either.
